Vagrant Story
« on: May 09, 2003, 09:16:25 pm »

This is for anyone who has finished Vagrant Story (if you haven't you don't know what you are missing Tongue).  I just finished the game again, and thought to myself "hey, you know what would be great?  A sequel on the PS2 following Ashley with his new awesomeness".  I think I read somewhere, sometime ago, that there was a sequel being considered... so, if by some off chance Square decides to not put out 12 more sequels to FFX and rather do something much better, do you think that a Vagrant Story sequel would center around Ashley, or be some other story all together?

Well, the way Vagrant Story was setup, the idea was (or at least seemed like) the first game was the setup... how Ashley becamse a vagrant, how he inherited his powers, and basically the backstory.  So yes, it would be awesome for a sequel to continue on with the ramifications of [span class=\"textspoiler\" onmouseover=\"this.style.color=\'#FFFFFF\';\" onmouseout=\"this.style.color=\'#3D3D3D\'\" style=\"textspoiler\"]Ashley inheriting the Dark[/span], and what it means to the Church, Parliament, VKP, the Mullenkamp cult, etc.

Lots of room to expand on the story for sure Smiley

I would be very interested in a sequel if it expanded a bit on the mysteries surrounding Mullenkamp and Kildea.  I have a story idea floating around in my head that touches on that, but the game's staff would do a much better job.  It is their story, after all.  ^.^

Besides, the story would require a lot of research.  I have the time and the resources, but not the motivation.

Mullenkamp, Kildea, the Dark, Rood Inverse, Ashley... they've got the makings for one hell of a story.  Now if only they'd MAKE it!

Anyone know what the VS team have been up to since 2000?  I heard that some of the FFT team worked on FFX-2 (and they, or some of them at least, worked on VS as well I seem to recall), but other than that...  Are they still at Square?

If there was a sequal to the game, it would probably use "Callo Merlose" as it's main character.  Squaresoft, would probably not allow us to play with a "Dark Agent Riot" as fun as that would be.

We already understant Ashley Riot's past to our best, and although we do not know if his family was murdered, or if it was a mental delusion would you really want to know?

We can't add anything more to Ashley Riot's character, except for his future, otherwise...  The only thing that would happen is a retelling of his past.  And that is not something that squaresoft would do.

It's bad form.

I think that they would begin to tell the story of Callo Merlose.  Either searching for Ashley Riot, or otherwise, Ashley Riot would become a target of VKP.  A stray agent on the loose doing dark things cannot be good.  It would be disrupting the peace.

If they bring it to the PS2 though, they would probably add more, especially for a female character.  Such as, a money system.  Since it may not take place in an abandoned city, it may take place in a city full of people.  And perhaps this time 'stealth' will have more of a part.  In the original "Vagrant Story" I used stealth 1 out of 10 times to no great degree of advantage.

Perhaps that will open more of the mystery.  Such as what is the VKP.  Where has Mullenkamp gone without it's leader.  Or how do VKP Riskbreaker agents hide eight halberds in their shorts.

Now THAT is the infamous question!

With as crazy as Square-Enix has gone, I'd be happy with a PS2 remake of the first one, although I really want a chance to play Dark Ashley.  Playing the bad guy is fun, as Disgaea (and to some extend Suikoden III) has taught me.

If they had a "Dark Agent Riot" it would only be challenging/addicting depending on his powers.  Like the powers that Sydney Losstarot had.

Most of which were his charismatic ability though.  Illusions.  Immortality.  Faith.

A "Dark Agent Riot" wouldn't be another Super Fast Super Strong Uber Magical always prepared character provided for people's insecurity complexes.

Hmm... you know, maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I might take the recent announcement that Vagrant Story will be added to the Greatest Hits list around Christmas to be a good sign on the "Good lord we need a VS sequal!" front.
Not that it's guaranteed, but it does seem a tad less like a hopless dream now, you know?

Be careful.  If anyone remembers, Parasite Eve
And Parasite Eve II.

Squaresoft may take a message, but if the US is all that wants a game.  Then they may let SquareUSA do the game

And we all know how good SquareUSA makes games

I liked Parasite Eve (the original) a lot.

Yes, the original Parasite Eve was awesome.  I really like modern stories, especially seeing as they're so few and far between as far as the roleplaying market is considered.  Parasite Eve II was overall pretty crappy, basically amounting to nothing more than a Resident Evil ripoff.  The Gunblade was kind of cool though.

I think a game that took the graphical quality and depth of mood and atmosphere of Silent Hill 3, and added a more mystical/occult theme (like Parasite Eve) through a roleplaying game-style interface, would perhaps be one of the coolest games ever.

I'm attempting to do something like that.  I'm writing a system for an MMORPG or POSTBOARD RP, set in an anachronistic technology setting.  New world.

In an attempt to recreate an RpG system that removes things to allow people to roleplay, than to powergame.  Fully character customize, but balanced so that each choice has it's own balanced advantage/disadvantage scheme

I'd definitely buy a sequel to Vagrant Story provided it was really well written and not just a money grab.  I don't care if the graphics are updated because, frankly, the look of Vagrant Story has a pleasing uniqueness to it that I found refreshing after the slickness of FFs and such.  I hope Hitoshi Sakimoto does the music again--it was superb!

I think that a continuing story about Riot or a new story with Merlose in the lead could be very interesting.  Even better, blend the two together and give us some interesting sub-plots that intertwine.  Riot doesn't have to continue his search for his past anymore but there could be some Cult members that still need tracking down.

The main thing I wouldn't want to see is a dumbing down of this game.  Vagrant Story actually took a brain to play.  It wasn't a game for everyone, certainly not for yer basic FF fanboy.  I liked the whole feel of the game; it was comparatively adult, and I'd like to see it stay that way.  Sequels tend to be made to capitalize on the success of the original title, not to really offer anything new.  I'd hate to see that happen to one of my favorite games of all time.  And yet...a sequel to this fine game would be more than welcome.  If it becomes a reality, I'll be checking it out.
