Guardian Angels Update: 02-08-05
« on: February 09, 2005, 05:15:26 am »

Life tends to get in the way of updates.  Sorry about that.  From now on, I'm going seasonal - that means one update per semester, and one update per vacation, unless I get so many submissions that I can't resist.  (Chances of that happening are slim.)

The 10 Themes challenge is still going.  ReynardFox is kicking my ass with all of her entries.  I've got to get moving.  >_>

Fan Fiction
ReynardFox's first challenge fic, "Unification" has been posted.  "Something Like Cinnamon" has also been added.  Both can be found on the Episode 5 archive page.

Fan Art
ReynardFox (whose donations made this update happen =P) has also submitted two new pieces of fan art, which can be found on her gallery page.

References
The entry for Kahal has been updated, and will probably be updated again in the future when I have time.  I'd love to renovate the entire section, but I'm lazy.

I'll take that Anonelbe reference any time, AC.

I suppose you'll have to find her and ask.  =D

As for me, I haven't finished Episode II yet.  It's interesting, but not so compelling that I absolutely must play at every free moment.  There are more important things to work on.

Not that anyone's asking me, but this thread seems rather spoiler-free, so -
I'm digging Xenosaga 2 so far.  Having the battle system explained to me in a coherent manner by a friend has helped no end, I must admit, but now that I understand what's going on it no longer seems absolutely unfair (though I am also told that's going to change before the end).  Storyline-wise, it's good stuff.  I dig the scenes, Kajiura's music either goes relitavely unnoticed which is fine, or just hits a certain resonating spot which is awesome.  So, no worries there.  The actual in-game music (towns/dungeons/battles) goes either unnoticed or is fucking horrible, however.  Sucks, that.  One day they'll make a Xenosaga game and get the music right.  How hard can it be? (Xenogears, in my opinion, uses its music more or less perfectly, but for the fact that you've heard every tune in the game bar last boss/ending themes by the time you hit Solaris on CD1).

Anyways, my main gripe with Xenosaga and probably Xenosaga 2 (though it remains to be seen), is that it's over just when you're finally hitting the 'okay, the plot is really moving now, and my characters are starting to rule' stage.  It'd be kind of like ending FF6 on the floating continent, or something.  Almost as if there's a beginning, a middle, but no end, to each seperate segment of the story.  That bothers me, sure, but it's not enough to make me want to take the whole of Monolith to task on whether they're good writers or not, cause I don't really care about watertight writing and exposition in video games.   I'd only like the storylines of about two games if I did.  Then again, I don't really care about it in books either, as long as I'm into the story then I'm happy.  Of course, with books, being well-written is usually required to get any publisher to put it out (at least, from what I've seen).

As for the whole Soraya Saga thing, and I mean no disrespect, but I think if she just didn't keep posting stuff about it on her site people would get bored really fast and just give up.  Not that I'm blaming her or anything, cause really there are hundreds of silly people who, rather than caring about Soraya or even Xeno/Monolith in general, are at this point just into the gossip.  And hey, when you're into game designer gossip, you know you're in trouble.

I don't pretend to know how she feels, but looking back at similar experiences, it's really hard to ignore the 'drama' and wait it out when your inbox is being flooded with insulting questions.  Maybe she just wanted to contradict some of the ridiculous speculations that were floating around.

There's no need to dwell on it more, in any case.  I've already talked about this.  ^^

I hear there's this guy with the pseudonym "TheContact" that like, makes games all day.  I mean, all day.  Here's the catch - he's a total ass and thinks he knows everything.  I don't know if it's true or not, but it might be, so you guys should stop emailing me about it.

Yeah, I've had quite a few similar (albeit on a much much much smaller and insignificant scale obviously) experiences like that, like where it would have saved so much hassle and heartache just to ignore, but the last time made me feel so utterly bad and stupid for a while afterwards I kind of just walked away from all of that, absolutely for the better.  And like I said, I don't blame her for all this or anything.  That and I don't even know her or what she's like of course.

I think I've heard of that thecontact dude, I think he trashed FF8 once upon a time.  He can't be that bad, then!
