A short introduction to Leibniz's philosophy

Big shortcut : and Leibniz was an "optimist". Since he was on that side, he was hated by writers and "Lumières" like Voltaire (see "Candide ou l'optimisme", an ironic masterpiece about optimistic philosophy) because this philosophy encouraged people to be passive (after all, all things are calculated by God, so there is no need to do anything, "Tout va pour le mieux dans le Meilleur des Mondes possibles". I don't like Leibniz too, for the same reasons (I'm a Voltaire "fan", and I love philosophy, even if my English vocabulary in this domain is limited to basics).

In Candide, Pangloss, "Leibniz", (remark that his name is the ancient greek for "Speaks about all) pretends for example that we were given noses to wear glasses, so we wear glasses, illustrating the stupidity of optimism and silly thoughts about "fate".

I respect Leibniz as a mathematician, but I hate his philosophy.

Speaking of candide, how do you pronounce Cunegonde?
