Matsuno Heads to Wii
« on: September 16, 2006, 07:12:35 pm »

Designer Yasumi Matsuno, known for his director-roles on Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, Vagrant Story, and Final Fantasy XII, has popped up at a Nintendo press event.  1Up has a translation of the interview.

The Wii controller makes total sense when you think about FPS-like games, but my question was, will the controls fit other existing games?
...
Graphics (these days) have evolved, and there are many games claiming that this generates a more realistic atmosphere. However, there are very few games that have a control interface that lives up to this atmosphere. With the Wii controller you can actually feel like you're touching or living in this atmosphere.

Since he left Square Enix mid-way through FFXII's development (not to mention the public eye), it'll be interesting to see what and where he's working on.  A Wii tactical RPG?

That's too bad I was hoping for a new Ogre Battle game. I've been wondering wat kinds of games could make use of the wii controller too. FPS games, fishing games, but what else? Is there a list of the launch titles out there somewhere?

I find your lack of rhythm disturbing.

I wasn't aware Matsuno had totally left Enixsoft (or maybe I was and I just forgot), but that news makes this news really freaking depressing.  Looks like they're set on doing these fucking FF sequels/prequels no matter what.  With Matsuno not around, I bet you anything it'll be directed by Nomura too, and it'll be about Vaan trying to stop a mysterious group of gay pretty boys wearing leather all over with hundreds of chains and zippers that serve no purpose.
Sigh.
On another note, this Wii games compilation video shows what looks like a strategy RPG at one point.  Not saying it's Matsuno's, but it does look like there are companies trying to make use of the wiimote for a wide variety of games, RPGs included.  So, you know, yay. Smiley

Titles to be released for the Wii by March 31, 2007.

There are a lot of launch titles.  A lot of those games have interesting controls too and aren't even trying to be straight ports (Marvel: Ultimate Alliance springs out as one of those titles).

Still, that's a huge launch as far as I'm concerned... that's more titles than any console I can remember in recent history.
