Yeah, I gotta say, after 97 hours, I finally beat this game (like Kost, it took me like 4 months or so... yikes).  Great gameplay, mediocre story.

But the story had so much promise, being set in Ivalice, having previous games establish great concepts like Church vs. Government, etc.  But it had none of that... it was a very straight "here's a bad guy, spend 95 hours getting more powerful, then beat him".  Nothing happens in this game.  There are events, sure.  But it feels like there was a grand story that got edited down to the bare minimum at the end.

At the end of the day, I think I put its fun-factor (overall) around where FF7 was.  Good, and holds a lot of promise, but doesn't quite achieve it like some of the other games.

Oh well... still great gameplay, and here's to hoping for a more fully realized work of goodness from Matsuno.

The story was basic, I agree - more power to Matsuno for managing to make it interesting, in my opinion.  It isn't to die for, like Vagrant Story or FFT, but I didn't think it was a disappointment, either.  The beautiful, multi-layered world made up for it.  (For me, anyway.  That was my favorite part of FFX too, though that game had a more complex story in addition to awesome world-building.)

I wasn't a fan of the gameplay until I had a full party.  The concept made me wary at first, but it works nicely as long as you're not running solo.
