If you're on Windows (and I assume you are), you should be able to do something like:
"C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --intf wx --nooverlay

basically run it with no overlay support... then just print screen.

There's probably a GUI option to turn off overlays too... so you might look for that first.

on OS X (and maybe on Windows?), there's also a nice little Snapshot feature under the Video menu.  It does exactly that.  It might be in the Windows version, but I don't have a conveniently running Windows box right now to tell you definitively.

On the desktop?  That's where it goes for me.

I find your lack of rhythm disturbing.

Just a stab in the dark, but maybe it gets copied to your clipboard?  Try going into paint or something, and pasting.

[Edit: Ah, okay, I'm wrong.  But I looked it up.  In VLC, go to Settings -> Preferences -> Video and then on the right hand side you should see an option to choose a video snapshot directory.  Choose whatever directory you want, and, you know, that's where it'll save it (though you may have to restart the player for it to work).]
