Romeo x Juliet
« on: February 02, 2007, 11:15:52 pm »

Apparently there's gonna be a new anime coming out this year based on Romeo and Juliet.  Of all of Shakespeare's plays, this is probably not the one I'd want to see an anime interpretation of, you know, the most (I'd love to see either Hamlet or Caesar, personally) - god knows there've been plenty of adaptations already.  But that doesn't necessarily mean it'll be bad, and it does look... interesting, at least.  I'm definitely curious.
Plus, the anime is being made by Gonzo (previously responsible, in part at least, for Gankutsuou, so I guess they have some experience with adapting classical literature), which means it should have nice animation.  And the music is by Hitoshi Sakimoto (!), which is awesome (even if his FFXII OST was less spectacular than I had hoped).

So anyway, yeah.  Just a heads up.  Might be worth checking out, whenever it... actually comes out.

When I saw the title I thought you were referring to that modern day version from 1996.

That's Romeo + Juliet.  The Japanese are taking it a step further and multiplying them.  It is thought that this may result in an even romeoandjulieter experience than we've ever seen before.

Well I think I'll hold out for someone to make Romeo^Juliet.

I can't understand why they would pick this play either. There's a lot of other ones that would be funnier / more acessable to people in Japan.

...at least they didn't try to go for Homer's plays.

Ohgod, I don't think I could take it if they did.

... That was probably the first time in history that the unmentionable abomination of a television program has had an engaging script.   Roll Eyes

Romeo and Juliet is ehhh to begin with.  I just dig Mercutio.  I'd definitely rather see an adaptation Hamlet.

... or Westside Story.  Lips Sealed

Why not "A Midsummer Night's Dream"? After analyzing this thing to death, I'd love to see someone animating the "preformance" of the craftworkers!

Yeah, I was also thinking it might be interesting/hilarious to see a melding of Shakespeare's and Japanese humour.  I don't know if I could take a whole Midsummer Night's Dream series, but a movie!  That could totally rule.
Also, I take back Caesar, and replace it with Macbeth.  Not that Caesar would be a bad play to base an anime on, but I actually think Macbeth might be the best source for this kind of thing.  Something about Lady Macbeth makes it easy to picture her as an anime character.

I don't know, I could kind of see the Odyssey as like a 50-episode anime series. Tongue

... And let's not forget that Macbeth (and King Lear) works very well in Japanese context - after all, Akira Kurosawa had his fun adopting Shakespear, too.
