Nintendo Acquires Monolith Soft
« on: April 27, 2007, 07:12:59 am »

Xenosaga-developer Monolith Soft has been acquired by Nintendo.  Namco, which held 96% of the company, sold 80% of its stake in the company to Nintendo, giving Nintendo a much-needed shot in the arm in the RPG department.

Does that mean Xenosaga for the Wii?  Maybe reading a database full of vital story information will be more fun if you get to mimic page flipping with the Wii controller. Wink

This news comes along with Nintendo posting record profits ($1.91 billion USD) on the strength of sales of the DS and Wii.  The DS has sold 40 million world-wide (approaching Nintendo's best-selling SNES, at 49 million).  It should eclipse that number this year pretty easily.  The Wii has sold 5.84 million units world-wide, and is expected to sell another 14 million this next fiscal year.  For comparison, the 360 to date has sold just under 10 million units since its introduction in 2005.

For me, this means that the DS is the place to be for developing games, with the Wii likely taking up second places for "next-gen" consoles.  Of course, I think the PS2 is probably the platform that's still most ripe for development given its install base.

Honestly, I'm not sure if they'll actually resume Xenosaga under Nintendo...

If anything, I wouldn't mind Kos-Mos making an appearance in Super Smash Bros Brawl. (Ohgod)

No wonder, even I have one now - but hey, it's all just because of the kanji program (why buy a portable dictionary, when I can buy a DS and use it for playing games AND translation purpose?! XD )
Really, now I'm more than ready for the DS-Xenosaga or whatever. Cheesy

Amen.

The DS kanji dictionary is actually pretty useful.  (I wish it'd been out when I bought my $300 electronic dictionary.  Gods.)  But anyway... I wonder if they'd be cool enough to move some of their Xenosaga spin-offs to the DS?  Probably not, but it would be nice.

I don't want a Wii version of Xenosaga unless it lets me punch Shion in the face.
