Cable modem question
« on: May 13, 2007, 10:12:01 pm »

I've been renting a cable modem from Comcast for a while, and it's acting crappy.  I want to buy my own before this rented one dies and they blame me.  Does anyone know what information (if any) I'll need to provide Comcast when we return the rented modem?  I guess like the serial number or MAC address?  I must admit, I don't know that much about modems or networks, but I found this modem which is listed as being compatible with Comcast.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122106

It's cheap, seems to have good reviews, and must be better then the refurbished one I've been renting for the past 3 years.   Undecided

I've got Comcast, and I had the same problem.  I replaced my cable modem with this and just went through the setup procedure again (when you open up IE on a PC, it goes through that whole setup page and stuff...)  I never called them to tell them anything, it's all auto-setup.

Oh, hey, I actually have that Motorolla modem, lol.  It works fine for me.  Occasionally my internet slows down to a crawl, but usually when that happens, I unplug my router for a few secs and plug it back in, and it's fine.  So I think it's safe to say the router is the problem there, not the modem.  Unless there's some compatibility issue between my modem and that particular router, I dunno.
But anyway, now I'm probably just confusing you (and everybody else.  And myself, a little).  The point is, that modem works totally fine, if you want it.
Though I recommend going with TC's suggestion, because he has never been wrong about anything.

More like I've been wrong about too much Wink

But yes, you should be sure that your cable modem is the one that's crapping out.  For me, it wouldn't assign any device an IP address, no matter how many times I power-cycled it.  The DLink has been good for the last 9 months or so that I've owned it.

If I turn off the modem, there's a 50% chance when I turn it back on it won't give anything an IP address.  However, if the modem is left on for too many days in a row, it just drops everything and won't connect.  So, if I turn it off, or leave it on too long, it does the same thing.  Only once have I had to power-cycle my Linksys router, and that was after a big storm when we had no electricity for a day.

It is an old, refurbished RCA.  Plus, I'd just like to not give additional money to Comcast monthly.  They already take too much money, and the cable tv sucks.  Jerks.

You know, I don't remember a setup page, but I guess I'll find out!
