Autumn Games Thread
« on: August 27, 2007, 04:40:34 am »

Well, it's starting...the deluge of games coming out this summer/autumn has started.  First Bioshock (which I want to play... and will get to it eventually), but even more important to me is Metroid Prime 3!  I'm really looking forward to a polished FPS interface on the Wii.

Anything else people are looking forward to?

Bioshock is amazing... It's like... System Shock 2 updated to modern look, but same feel and ambiance! It does require a powerful graphic card tho... Hell, even that Atlas dude that guides you.. I won't be surprised he will turn out to be Shodan of some sorts... Makes me all moist and horny... The game is really really sweet (tho I'm only about 6 hours into it, and only on 2nd level).

It is a speed hog tho...  My main rig with a 8800GTS is running it all maxed out no problem (CPU usage at like 30% max on all cores)... just shows how all the processing is done by the card and not the CPU... On the other hand, my GF7400 in my laptop struggles at 1280x800 on low details (with both cores choking  at 100%). But don't let that dissuade you... GET IT...

Oh, and don't be afraid of the rootkit controversy about this game - it just uses standart securom scheme (and misdetected by MS Rrootkit tool), just like many other games...

Yeah, I can't wait to get to Bioshock, but I'm going to have to defer to the Xbox 360 version.  There's no way in hell I'm spending that much money to get my PC top play what amounts to a port when a perfectly functional version exists on the 360.  Yes, I'll have to suffer the controller... but it shouldn't be too bad.

That said, Metroid Prime 3 is spoiling me.  I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think it has generally better controls than a mouse and keyboard.  You can't spin 180, but you *can* circle strafe while aiming around the screen... which is an amazing mechanic and works so smoothly with the Wii controls.

Playing a console FPS after this will be tough for sure.

I picked up Bioshock for the 360 the day it came out, and have been steadily making my way through it ever since.  It is, indeed, soooooooooo awesome.  I'm getting close to the end now... once I beat it I'll write up some more complete thoughts on it.  But for a condensed version...: the story, gameplay, graphics, and overall atmosphere of the game are phenomenal.  My only complaint is the abundance of fetch quests.  In fact, the whole game is basically comprised of nothing but fetch quests.  But the story, and, you know, the fun, sort of balance that out, and make the game really enjoyable overall.
Oh, and the 360 controls aren't too bad, either.  I haven't noticed the controller as being as much of a limiting factor as I have in the past, with other console FPSes.  But then, that could also just be because I'm finally getting accustomed to playing FPSes on consoles in general.

Picked up Metroid 3, too, but won't get started on that till after Bioshock.  Though I am looking forward to it.

So, Metroid plus Bioshock, plus the 360 I just purchased means I've spent... well, a lot more than I probably should have recently.  So I don't know if I'm really willing to buy that much more this autumn... but I do feel the urge to pick up Halo 3 when that ships.  And to get my hands on Assassin's Creed somehow.  And to buy Mario Galaxy.

Arrrrrrrrggghhhhh.  I think I'm gonna have to start selling organs.  Maybe even my own.

Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect.

SOLD.

GTAIV was also on my list, but now we're gonna have to wait until '08. Boo Hiss.

Also, let's not forget about HL2: Episode Two, and more importantly, TF2 and Portal.

I know it wasn't quite fall, but the only game I had been looking forward to was Wild ARMS 5.  So far it has been worth it - really fun game if anyone else still likes RPGs.

Yeah, I definitely want to play Wild ARMS 5... eventually.  I still have to play 4, though.  And I may use cheats to make getting through those tedious ship battles in 3 easier, so I can finally beat that game too.  I'm sure I've mentioned it before, but I do really like the WA series.  At least, I really liked the first 2, and even 3, before it got unplayable.

Another RPG I intend to play soon is Persona 3.  I haven't heard too much about it that makes me want to play it too badly, but I was a huge fan of the Digital Devil Saga games (really great and unique jRPGs, if anyone's looking for something like that.  Highly recommended), and I like the uniqueness, at least, of the Shin Megami Tensei games, so I will give it a chance at some point.

Mass Effect doesn't do much for me, honestly, from what I've seen of it.  It looks, well, like another BioWare game, which I understand really excites most people, but... I really have not been able to get into any of their games, myself.  There's always such a strong emphasis on sidequests, and a pretty weak main story (possibly as a result), and that's just not the kind of game I'm into.  I hate sidequests, dammit.
But a friend of mine is definitely going to be getting it, so I'll play it at his house, and maybe that'll change my mind.

And oh yeah, need to pick up HL2: Episode 2, too.  22222222.
Which really should be episode 3, as far as I'm concerned.  HL2 was episode 1, dammit.
But yeah, I'll probably pick that up for the 360, since I don't know if my computer can handle it (I was able to play HL2 and episode 1 on this thing.  Should that be enough to handle ep 2?), though it bugs me a little to be paying for games I already have (as part of the Orange Box).  I wish they would release a cheaper version with just episode 2, too. 2222.

GTAIV I'll steal off that same friend (who's getting Mass Effect), when he gets bored of it.

And Supreme Commander, I'll... uh... hey, look over there!

I think that if you can run HL2, you can run episode 2... I would hope so anyway.

Also, if you have Steam, then I think you can just grab episode 2 alone.  You don't have to buy at retail.

And yeah... y'know, buy SupComm! You'll like it, I swear!

Well, Episode 2 is supposed to have a bunch of new graphical features, like that high dynamic... lighting, I think it was called? thingy.  And other effects that my computer couldn't possibly pull off.  So even if I can play episode 2 with the settings turned all the way down or something, I'm not sure it's worth it.
Obviously if I decide to get it for PC, though, I would just buy it individually off Steam.  But there's no real similar solution for the 360, unfortunately.  That I know of.  Maybe I'll just hold off on buying it until the price goes down a bit...

And, in all honesty, I would buy Supreme Commander, if for no other reason than just to support a friend (though I hear it is pretty good, too), but again, my computer can't play it.  But if you port it to the 360, or the Wii, I will totally pick it up.  And then I might even carry it to the cash register and purchase it.

Well For me....

I just picked up Persona 3 and I'm lovin' it...clocked in just under 10 hours and I still can't wait till I get home to play it this weekend....

And I'm not sure if anybody here has picked up a PS3 but I also just got myself a copy of Warhawk (bought the retail one to get the headset). The game's awesome. I'm previously not into Multiplayer FPS/shooter but this game changed my mind..coupled with the fact that I'm playing it with friends...

Oh and I'm definitely buying The Next Ratchet Series...can't really remember what's the full title...Plus Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (The new Naughty Dog) Game. Other than that....I dunno...My wife's (and me of course)  is expecting a baby in about 2 weeks...so I don't kow if I'm gonna have time to play 'that' many games.

p/s: If you're wondering why I don't have a 360...It's because it 3RODed me in the first 3 weeks playing Forza...I then decided to exchanged it with a PS3. I'll probably buy it again when the new 'falcon' chip unit launched.

p/p/s: I'm i the same ship as Surtur...My PC can't handle it...Just upgraded to the new Core 2 Duo but my gfx card is still the old x550.

Yeah, I don't blame anyone for not having a beefy enough machine to run SupComm... it runs a *lot* better now, but it's still a pretty resource intensive game, kinda like Total Annihilation was.

I refuse to support Sony and their PS3.  REFUSE.  I've suffered their wrath for quite some time, and will wait until they shape up and deserve money.  They're like a mid-nineties Nintendo, but with lots of non-gaming divisions.

That is what I thought when I decided to get a 360 the first time around...but when the 3ROD thingy happen...well..you know...

Anyway..Anybody else picking up Wild Arms 5? I know Surtur would want one since he like into it and stuff...I really want it too but not sure if I will have time playin it....not to mention I'm very much enjoying Brave Story and Jeanne D'Arc for the PSP...both are RPGs and that has taken all my on-the-move game time...

And talk about RPGs...there's suddenly a lot of them that needs to be played....like Mass Effecs and also Blue Dragon too for the 360...

Not only do we have to sell our organs to get the money...we'd have to sell our souls to the devil to get time to play these games...

Heh, yeah, mine busted too, but I got my 360 pre-launch.  Microsoft eventually replaced mine for free and gave me an extended warrantee too, so I can't complain.

I mentioned Wild ARMs 5 a few posts up.  I'm not that far into it yet, but it seems really good.  I hadn't played a WA game since the first one, but my friend assured me I wouldn't be missing much besides cameos.  It was nice that the game came with an art book too.  I'm a sucker for nice artwork.
