OKAMI!! WII!! OKAMI FOR THE WII!!
« on: October 19, 2007, 03:36:18 pm »

OMFG

Only potential downside is it's not being developed by the original team, but by some other company called Ready at Dawn or something.  They'd better not do a half-assed job.  Entire asses will be required for the porting of this game.

Edit:  IGN has an interview with the President of Ready at Dawn about the upcoming port.  Here are some key quotes:

Quote
How have the graphics been enhanced?

Didier Malenfant:
Okami is a total passion-project for both Ready At Dawn and Capcom. When we first discussed it with them, two things were very clear right off the bat: Firstly, taking after a studio like Clover is some pretty big shoes to fill, something everyone here is very comfortable with given our past projects. Second, this game is such a masterpiece in its own right that we had to do everything we can to reproduce the experience that players had on the PS2 as closely as possible. To this day the graphics of Okami are some of the most awe-inspiring ever seen in a video-game and I know it sounds cliche but you don't want to fix something that's not broken.
Quote
What new content appears in the game, compared to the PS2 version?

Didier Malenfant:
The game on Wii is going to be an exact port of the PS2 version and I think that's what fans of the franchise want to see. This game has such a huge following throughout the world that people would probably send us death-threats if we messed it up by trying to add things that don't have their place in the Okami universe. Being huge fans of the franchise ourselves, we made sure that Capcom also wanted to stay true to the original before signing on to do this.
Quote
Will the Wii version offer anything to those who have completed the original?

Didier Malenfant:
Everyone we talk to is saying that they're going to replay this even if they finished the original. The Wii controls are perfect for this game and it makes the game play come to life in so many ways. There are also people who never finished or played the PS2 version and this will be their opportunity to experience Okami the way it was meant to be. This game is a huge milestone in our industry and we're going to give a lot more people a chance to see it for themselves when it comes out on the Wii.
Translation:  We wanna get it on there as fast and with as little effort as possible so fans can start giving us more money for it.  Yeah, this is sounding pretty fucking half-assed to me.

Really?  I don't know if it's anymore half-assed than ResEvil 4 for the Wii.  I think it will actually be easier to play for a lot of people (drawing with the Wii controller in battle is much easier than with the PS2 analog thumbsticks)

It's not like they're calling it a sequel... it's a port, and that's what ports are.

I believe Ready At Dawn developed the Daxter and also the Ratchet game for the PSP and If I remember correctly, the upcoming God of War for the PSP too.

Based on their two previous PSP games they are a great bunch of people creating great games. And the upcoming GOW for PSP is shaping up to be a great game too.

So I believe that they will at least not make it half-assed. I personally believe in them...But still this game won't make me buy a Wii....

Maybe Super Mario Galaxy would...but then....That is only one game....

Well, RE4 for the Wii was pretty half-assed, lol.  Although at least that one included the best stuff from the Cube and PS2 versions in one package, and was priced nicely.  If Okami for the Wii is priced about the same, it may be worth picking up.  Otherwise, this is sounding like a rental.

Ports are all well and good for people who didn't get to play the original game, but if developers want people who did play the original to pick it up again too, they need to do a little more than stick a new control scheme on it, imo.

I would rather they add some new side-quests/dungeons at least.  Even if they did a terrible job on them, you wouldn't actually have to play them, and the main game would still be there - but at least you'd know they put some effort into it.

I think the Wii has a good number of games worth owning, both out now and still in the works.  Metroid, Zelda, Super Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros... okay, so that's really just Nintendo stuff... but Nintendo makes really good games.  And that's really what the Wii is, is a machine that gives you the opportunity to play some cool, original Nintendo stuff.  A lot of cool, original Nintendo stuff.  Plus a few other sweet innovative games here and there (like No More Heroes.  Hopefully, unless it winds up sucking).  You won't be playing it as often as a 360 or PS3, maybe, but a) it also costs less and b) you'll probably have more fun when you do. Tongue  So I think it's definitely worth getting, but that's just me.

Trivia: Developers porting a game are typically going after people who don't own the other console.  So no, for the most part, there are no sales from people who already own the game.  You are not a target market.

It's also looking to be the dominant console for this generation, so you can bet in about a year or two, you'll start seeing tons of RPGs and other popular genres being made for the Wii first.

Also, FYI, Mario Strikers Charged is amazingly good.  And
this
could be amazing... and freakin' lightsabers.  Hopefully it's as awesome as it sounds.

Ah.  Well, that's understandable - although I was thinking specifically of ports of old games on new consoles (like snes games for the ds, for example).  But I don't know if those cases would be any different.  Guess it just sucks to be me then, lol.

Project H.A.M.M.E.R was actually, unfortunately, cancelled. Sad
But Star Wars - yes.  Hope that one turns out good.

Not to argue a stupid point, but... what's the point in a few half-assed extra sidequests if you don't have to play them, and they look bad?  :p  Personally, I'd rather see them put that extra effort into porting a game correctly.  I mean, if they do an awesome job on the extras as well as the port, that's a different story.  That's real effort.  The other senario is kind of like a backhanded insult.

I still have to play Okami for the PS2, but this is a cool idea.  The Wii owners in the house will probably love it.

Damn, now I wish I'd started Okami instead of Abyss, but oh well.

Ja?  I didn't say they should half-ass the extras.  What I meant by what I did say was that they should try to make really good extras (in addition to doing a good port), and if they fail, because they just aren't as talented as the original group of developers or something, well, at least you won't have to play them, and at least you'll know they tried (their best).  But that's a worst case scenario - hopefully, the extras would turn out to be really good.  That's what would make the purchase worth it for me... but as TC pointed out, I'm not their target market - so I guess I would no longer say they should do that... I just also probably won't buy it. Tongue  I'd rent it at most.  I am certainly excited to try the game with Wii controls, but it's not worth full game price for me.  The game was already amazing on the PS2.

And by Abyss, do you mean Tales of the?  Cause that game was boring as hell.  I actually played it all the way through, and like most Tales games, it got more interesting towards the end, but for the most part it was sooooooo dull.  Put that away and play Okami.  Okami is fantastic.  Unless you wanna wait for the Wii version. Tongue  Then put it away and play something else.

For some reason I didn't read it that way.  Point taken.  :p

And yes, I'm talking about Tales of the Abyss.  I actually don't think it's so bad, but it doesn't have me on the edge of my seat like... well, even like XSIII did at times.  Tales games are great if you want some fun.

I might start Okami anyway, though.
