just wondering what all of you think of the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series that are being made for the big screen 2007/2008. the first movie is out in Japan and is called You Are (Not) Alone. it's basically the first 6 episodes of the series combined to make one movie and ends with operation Yashima.

the intent is to make the first 3 movies a remake of the series with the 4th one being a completely new ending. what surprised me about this remake thing is that Anno himself is behind the director's seat once more. since Anno suffered a depression while making the original TV series and was angry when he made the End of Evangelion, is anyone else curious where he might take the series now when he should be feeling much better?

and no, i have not seen this movie yet. i'm more interested in the 3 that will follow.

Hmm, well, it certainly was a landmark anime series.  The one strong criticism that's leveraged against it is that it has a hard time expressing metaphors and symbolism while maintaining its narrative (the last eps of the series demonstrate that failing most vividly).

If the movies are a re-telling of the story, hopefully Anno will be able to better blend the various ideas he had in a more cohesive fashion.

Evangelion may not be the most entertaining anime but it's still the most relevant and had a huge international success. there was even talk of an american live-action film at some point. Anno also said somewhere that he used Christian terms and metaphors because it was exotic and wouldn't have used them if he knew Evangelion was going to be an international success.

i heard that the number of angels are reduced from 18 to 12 in Rebuild, the 1st Angel is Adam, the 2nd Angel is Lilith, and the 3rd angel is Lilim. Eva story begins with the 4th angel (Sachiel is now the 4th, Shamshel the 5th and Ramiel the 6th.) 6 angels left to fight in the other 3 films. also there will be new EVA-units and a new pilot character.

i hope the remaining 6 Angels are Leliel, Bardiel, Zeruel, Arael, Armisael and Tabris. i didn't care much for the other angels.

I haven't been keeping up, is this going to have the MP evas and everyone turning into tang?

nothing is known about the 3rd and 4th films. the only thing i know about the second movie is that it will introduce Kaji, Asuka, a new girl pilot character and take a different route from the TV series compared to the first film (which reviewers in Japan are calling Evangelion ep 1-6 special edition, since it's like the TV series only with updated effects and added scenes.)
