Friend's comp freezes when I try to reinstall WinXP

I've tried to boot from cd and change BIOS boot order to cd 1st. When I select to boot from the cd, the comp freezes on that option. When I change BIOS to boot cd 1st, it loads but then hangs as if there isn't any further step to take (not necessarily frozen).

Other than getting another hard drive to install fresh (just an assumption), is there any possible way for me to reformat his comp for a fresh XP install? I can boot into windows just fine.

Did you flash the bios?  Is hte motherboard old? Perhaps the battery is dead.

Comp was built (by dell, his service w/them is expired so no easy solution thru them) about a year and a half ago. I'll read up on flashing the bios, he's otherwise running a healthy SP2 XP system.
