Finally beat the game!
« Reply #15 on: March 01, 2003, 10:01:00 pm »

right, i've been playing it from the beginning again and i just beat the big dragon boss after doing some stuff in the first workshop. didn't know what to make really since all my weapons and armor are weak and after merging a few i still don't feel any difference, i get owned by some enemies but the bosses have been pretty easy so-far. is it common to be owned by some enemies your first time through even though you used the workshops? also i ditched the exploring around this time... is tedious exploring every corner of the dungeon benefitial?

Exploring will nab you some good stuff.  Don't build up without checking what you're trying to build.  You want to raise your weapons affinities for certain creatures too, not just their properties.  That helps tremendously.

how do i check what i'm trying to build? i can't read off of the stats that well... i mean they are often all on minus (-1) and they don't get up by merging with another weapon, but a good weapon will lower one stat if fused with a bad weapon, and they are all bad weapons except for the one or two good ones, but i can't merge them for some reason since i've already merged them with something else and renamed them.

and what are "gems"? why do i attach gems, what purpose do they serve? and whenever i can attach a gem, should i attach it even if i never use the weapon? or should i hold off until i get a good weapon to attach the gems on that instead?

which is most important/or which order should i do things in? this is the order i do things in but i don't really know what i'm doing so-far:

repair
combine
assemble weapons
attach gems

Wow.. lol
okay, first off, you really should read the manual built into the game, it will explain most of this.

First off, in terms of affinities:
Human
Beast
Undead
Phantom
Dragon
Evil

You can make a weapon and *use* it against Humans and Phantoms, or Beasts and Dragons, or Undead and Evil.  The reason is that if your weapon goes up in Human affinity (by using it on humans), it's likely that Beast and Undead will get lowered.  So you can get by with three weapons, so long as you use them judiciously.  If they are -1 or something, you've been using the same weapon on more than one type of enemy.  So go back out there and name your weapons so you know which to use on what enemy.

Don't try to mix metals too soon, and try to combine the weaker weapons with the same type of weapon (dagger with dagger). Same goes for armor.  Honestly, if you don't want to experiment, you can just look up a guide

As far as gems go, I just keep them around, and attach them to weapons that I find them useful on. LIke if a gem gives a boost when killing, say, fire creatures, and I see a lot of fire creatures of type X, then the weapon that handles type X creatures will get that gem.

the link to that guide doesn't work, but nevermind it, i'd like to get through this game without using a guide anyway. now i understand this a little better and i don't get owned as much anymore.

my problem right now is the fairie circle area... i can't get out of that maze. when i go straight forward i just bump into a dead end because the snow fairies are blocking the exit, or something. how do i get pass this fairie circle forest part?

oh, lol, uh, yeah... Snowfly Forest... that's the part of the game that kinda super sucks.  I'll give you directions:

[span class=\"textspoiler\" onmouseover=\"this.style.color=\'#FFFFFF\';\" onmouseout=\"this.style.color=\'#3D3D3D\'\" style=\"textspoiler\"]From where you start, go this way on the map (assume that the direction is based on your view, not Ashley's... so right is your right, like the right side of the screen, not Ashley's right.  Also, the rooms are numbered, and you start in room 1.  So if you look at the directions, you'll see that in room 1, you go up, in room 2 you go up, etc.):
1 Up
2 Up
3 Up
4 Up
5 Right
6 Up
7 (boss fight in this room)
Up
8 Down
9 Right
10 Up
11 Up
12 (cross the chasm)
Down
13 Down
14 Left
15 Down
16 Down
17 (boss fight)
Down
18 Exit
[/span]

I have all three games, but have yet to play VS yet.  It was given to me by a friend 6 months ago and I read several reviews and played it briefly.  It didn’t seem too appealing to me.  Now, after reading your posts about the game I’m going to start playing it this weekend and give it a through workout.

As for FFT and Xenogears I’ve beaten them may times over and believe that they are great games.  I especially enjoy the complexity of the characters, the social issues and much more about the game.

Specifically, in Xenogears I like that the Ethos the “church organization in the game” which appears to be good and pure mirrors the Catholic Church in our world.  Now before a flame war starts I have no ill feeling towards any religion.  I prefer to be open-minded; but I think that the Catholic Church which has been hiding sexual abuse cases for many years is totally wrong.  Also, if you do some research the Catholic Church which has many of the Dead Sea scrolls doesn’t want that information to be publicly available because it would damage their reputation.

In FFT (and other FF games) I like that the “Summon” spells are actually “Gods” from various cultures.  For example Shiva is the Hindu god for the Destroyer of the Universe.  KOTR (from FF7) is King Arthur (legendary king and knights raised to mythical/God-like status).

All in all FFT and Xenogears are great games and I’m sure that I’ll enjoy VS.  I appreciate the thread and want you to know that your posts have gotten me interested in the game.

I've had the same problem with VS many people already touched upon here. It was really weird for me though... At first I actually hated the game. I thought it was one of the worst games ever (I'm not kidding). A true waste of money. So the first time through, I quit about half way through (right after the Earth Dragon).

But then one day, about a year (or maybe even 2) after that, I decided to give it another shot. First time through, I liked it. In fact, I became addicted to it. I've completed it about 6 or 7 times now (all new game +, don't shoot me) and I love it. It's strange... Now I really think it's brilliance, and one of the best RPGs/games ever made. Again, quite strange...
